Teams Premium features deep dive

Microsoft Teams Premium is a paid add-on with a specific set of meeting and protection features. Here's what you get.

Microsoft Teams Premium is a paid per-user add-on that bundles a set of advanced Teams capabilities not included in standard plans, even E5. Knowing what's in it helps decide whether the add-on is worth it for your tenant.

Intelligent meeting recap

The flagship feature: Teams Premium meetings get intelligent recap automatically:

  • AI-generated meeting notes with section headings.
  • AI-generated action items assigned to specific people where named.
  • Speaker timelines so you can jump to who said what.
  • Chapters auto-detected from topic changes.
  • Personalised insights — highlights of when you were mentioned, when topics relevant to you came up.

Requires meeting transcription to be enabled (which itself requires explicit consent in many configurations).

Advanced meeting protection

  • Watermarks — recipient name/email watermarked on shared content and video, deterring screenshots.
  • End-to-end encryption for scheduled meetings (1:1 has E2E in standard Teams; group meetings require Premium).
  • Sensitivity-label-driven meeting policies — apply different controls to meetings labelled Confidential or Highly Confidential.
  • Restricted content sharing — block specific apps and surfaces from receiving shared content.

Advanced webinars

Premium adds webinar features beyond the standard Teams webinar:

  • Manual registration approval — review and approve attendees rather than auto-confirming.
  • Registration waitlists when capacity is reached.
  • Custom registration questions with rich field types.
  • Custom branded landing pages matching organisation branding.
  • RTMP-in — bring in external A/V feeds from a hardware encoder.
  • Green room enhancements for presenters.

Virtual appointments

Premium enables the Virtual Appointments experience for businesses with customer-facing meetings:

  • Branded waiting rooms.
  • SMS notifications for appointments and reminders.
  • Queue management.
  • Integration with Microsoft Bookings.

Used heavily in healthcare, financial services, professional services.

Town hall enhancements

For very large broadcasts, Premium adds Town Hall features:

  • Larger attendee capacities.
  • External presenter support.
  • More language options for real-time interpretation.

Personalisation

  • Custom Together Mode scenes matching your brand.
  • Organisation backgrounds delivered to all users.
  • Customised meeting templates for repeatable session types.

What it doesn't include

  • Microsoft 365 Copilot is a separate add-on — Teams Premium doesn't unlock Copilot in Teams.
  • Teams Phone is also separate — Premium doesn't add calling capabilities.
  • Teams Rooms Pro is a separate per-room licence — different product.

Should you buy it

Teams Premium is most valuable for:

  • Executive teams running confidential meetings — watermarking, E2E encryption, label-driven controls.
  • External-facing teams running webinars, training, customer events — advanced webinar features.
  • Customer-service organisations — virtual appointments.
  • Heavy meeting users — intelligent recap saves real time.

For organisations where most meetings are casual internal stand-ups, Premium's value is lower. Pilot with a focused group and measure before broadcasting it.
