Copilot in Microsoft Forms

Starting a form from a blank page is the most tedious part of building one. Copilot's job in Microsoft Forms is to skip that part: describe what you're trying to find out, and it drafts the questions.

Where to find it

From Forms, start a new form and choose the option to generate with Copilot (sometimes labelled as a prompt box on the new-form screen). Describe the form in plain language — "a post-event feedback survey for a two-day conference, covering sessions, venue, and whether they'd attend again" — and Copilot returns a draft with questions, types, and, for multiple choice, answer options already filled in.

What it does

Generates a full draft. Rather than one question at a time, Copilot produces a complete form structure from a single prompt, choosing sensible question types (rating scales for satisfaction, multiple choice for categorical answers, open text for feedback) based on what you described.

Builds quizzes, not just surveys. Tell it you want a quiz on a given topic and Copilot generates questions with a correct answer marked, useful for a quick knowledge check without writing every question by hand.

Suggests additional questions on an existing form. Even after you've started manually, Copilot can propose more questions related to the topic, which you accept or discard individually.

Editing after generation

Treat the output as a strong first draft, not a finished form. In practice this means:

• Re-read every question for phrasing and bias — generated questions occasionally lead the respondent.
• Check quiz answers Copilot marked as correct, especially on anything specific to your organisation or a niche subject.
• Adjust question types where the guess is close but not quite right (a rating scale where you actually wanted a short text answer, for instance).
• Reorder — Copilot's ordering is logical but not necessarily the flow you want for a live audience.

What it needs

Microsoft Forms is included across most Microsoft 365 plans; the AI generation features have rolled out at different depths depending on licensing and region, so check current licensing before relying on a specific capability being available to everyone in your tenant. There's no separate admin switch beyond the tenant's general Copilot and Forms settings.

Where it falls short

Copilot works from the topic you describe, not from institutional knowledge of your organisation's specific processes — a generated onboarding survey won't know your actual onboarding steps unless you describe them. Very specialised or technical quizzes need more manual correction than a general survey. And branching logic (skip a section based on an earlier answer) generally still needs to be set up manually after generation rather than requested in the initial prompt.
