What is the difference between Teams Essentials and Teams in Microsoft 365?
Teams Essentials is a standalone Teams subscription for small businesses — chat, meetings, calling, and file sharing without a full Microsoft 365 tenant. Teams inside Microsoft 365 Business or Enterprise is tenant-integrated: it runs on the tenant's Entra ID, uses SharePoint for files and Exchange for calendars, and honours Conditional Access, DLP, and every other tenant policy.
What Teams Essentials includes
- Unlimited group chat, 300 participants per meeting, up to 30 hours per meeting.
- 10 GB of cloud storage per user for chat files.
- Basic identity via a Microsoft Account or a light Entra tenant, without full Microsoft 365 workloads.
- Priced per user, well below Business Basic.
What Teams in Microsoft 365 adds
- Full SharePoint-backed team files, Loop components, Whiteboard, Planner, and OneNote integration.
- Exchange calendars for meetings, room mailboxes, and delegate scheduling.
- Tenant-wide identity, Conditional Access, DLP, sensitivity labels, and retention.
- Teams Phone with Calling Plans, Operator Connect, or Direct Routing.
- Copilot for Microsoft 365 add-on eligibility.
Teams Essentials is a good fit for a small team using Google or nothing else for productivity and needing better meetings. Once the organisation has Exchange, SharePoint, or Intune requirements, Business Basic or higher is the right step.
