How many external guests can I add to a Microsoft 365 tenant?
Entra ID allows up to 50,000 external user objects per paid Entra ID licence assigned in the tenant, which puts the ceiling far above what most organisations ever need. The practical limit is governance — access packages, sponsors, reviews, and lifecycle — not the SKU.
What actually counts
- Each B2B guest is one external user object, regardless of how many Teams or SharePoint sites they are added to.
- The 50,000-per-licence ratio applies across the tenant, not per member. One P1 licence effectively lifts the cap for 50,000 external users.
- External users invited via Entra External ID for customers (CIAM) have their own MAU-based pricing separate from workforce Entra ID.
Governance is the real constraint
- Access packages give guests a sponsor, expiry, and review — the difference between 5,000 governed guests and 5,000 orphans.
- Cross-tenant access settings decide which tenants can invite in and which claims are trusted.
- Access reviews remove guests that have stopped needing access — otherwise the count only grows.
