Does Microsoft Purview work with Google Workspace?
Partially. Microsoft Purview eDiscovery, DLP, and Insider Risk Management have connectors that ingest Google Workspace mail, drive, and chat as a third-party data source for discovery and DLP. Sensitivity labels only apply to Microsoft file formats and PDF; they do not label native Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides in place.
What Purview can do with Google Workspace
- Ingest Gmail messages via the Google Workspace data connector into a mailbox for eDiscovery and retention.
- Ingest Google Chat and Google Drive content via Microsoft or third-party connectors (Veritas, TeleMessage, LineControl) as journaled records.
- Run DLP on ingested content once it lives in the Microsoft 365 boundary.
- Use Insider Risk indicators derived from Google Workspace activity where the connector emits them.
What Purview does not do
- Sensitivity-label a native Google Doc in place — labels attach to .docx, .xlsx, .pptx, PDF, and email, not to Google's native file formats.
- Enforce DLP inside Google's editor at the same moment a user types — DLP runs against the ingested copy on the Microsoft side.
- Replace Google's own admin controls — Google Vault, Google DLP, and Workspace admin still own their side of the estate.
For organisations that genuinely operate across both, the pattern is Google-native controls inside Google, Microsoft Purview for cross-estate discovery, retention, and DLP visibility on the ingested copies.
