Microsoft Project is Microsoft's product line for serious project management. The desktop Project for Windows (.mpp files) edits schedules with Gantt charts, dependencies, resource allocation, and critical path analysis. Project Online is the SaaS offering for portfolio management. Planner premium (formerly Project for the Web) is Microsoft's modern, Dataverse-backed project tool, increasingly the recommended path for new projects. Project Online Plan 1 covers basic web access; Plan 3 adds desktop client and resource management; Plan 5 adds portfolio management and demand-management features. Project Server is the on-premises equivalent, still supported but no longer in active investment.
