Content Type
A SharePoint definition bundling columns, behaviour, and metadata for a category of content.
A content type in SharePoint is a reusable definition bundling columns, behaviour, retention, workflow, and metadata for a specific category of content — Contract, Invoice, Project Plan, Policy Document. Defined once in the Content Type Hub, syndicated to sites that consume them, content types let many libraries use the same column schema and rules. A library can support multiple content types — when uploading, the user picks which type the document is, and gets the appropriate metadata fields. Less commonly used in modern SharePoint than in classic, since modern lists and libraries lean toward direct column definition, but still valuable for organisations needing consistent metadata governance at scale.
